Following numerous studies which report that moderate drinking is beneficial , is this the case for diabetic patients? Or is there a risk to drinking alcohol ?and what is considered 뱈oderate?
Alcohol consumption has a negative effect on metabolism; alcohol metabolises slowly and therefore must be controlled to prevent intoxication. The liver functions overtime to metabolize the alcohol and treats it as a poison, ridding itself of the toxin as quickly as possible, therefore postponing other more important functions such as utilization of fatty acids as fuel and storing excess fatty acids as triglycerides which causes huge amount of fatty acid accumulation in the liver. Moreover, it causes the body to postpone converting stored carbohydrates into glucose, which may expose the body to low blood sugar levels ?especially when combined with medications or insulin.
Meanwhile, studies have been conducted to determine how alcohol use affects the risk of, and management of diabetes. Among people without diabetes, moderate drinkers (1-3 drinks / day) developed 33-56% fewer cases of diabetes compared to non-drinkers. Heavy consumption (more than 3 drinks/day), however, was associated with a 43% increase of the risk in developing diabetes. In diabetics, moderate alcohol usage was associated with a 34-55% lowered incidence of coronary heart disease. However, researchers had concluded that more extensive studies in this area are needed to identify long-term effects of alcohol on glucose and non-cardiac complications in diabetics.
DID YOU KNOW?
– Drinking alcohol causes an increase in blood pressure. If you suffer from hypertension it can contribute to kidney failure, heart disease and retinopathy.
– Alcohol impairs the liver뭩 ability to clear fat from the blood and increases triglyceride levels. You should not drink alcohol if you have high triglyceride levels (over 200 mg/dl).
– Alcohol is toxic to nerves. If you have neuropathy from diabetes in your arms, legs or feet, drinking alcohol can make it more severe.
– Alcohol moves quickly into the blood without being metabolized in your stomach. Within 5 minutes of drinking there is enough alcohol in your blood to be measured, and it won뭪 peak until 30-90 minutes after you take a drink.
– Do not exercise before drinking and be cautious when dancing while you are drinking. You should always eat something when you ingest alcohol and keep a close eye on your blood glucose levels.
Obviously abstention is advised for individuals with a history or alcohol abuse, pregnant women or people with medical issues such as liver disease, pancreatitis, advanced neuropathy, severe hypertriglyceridemia. The American Diabetes Association also notes that only observational studies and small trials have been reported on and therefore the data may not support recommending alcohol consumption for those at risk of, or with, diabetes. If such individuals consume alcohol, they should follow the recommendations set forth in the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans which suggests no more than 1 drink per day for women and 2 per day for men. A 밺rink?according to these guidelines contains about 14 grams of alcohol and is defined as:
?nbsp;12 ounces of regular beer
?nbsp;5 ounces of wine
?nbsp;1.5 ounces of 80 proof distilled spirits
Eleotin and Alcohol
Alcohol seems to wash away the effects of Eleotin. Please be reminded that the effect of most of herbal medicines in general, not only Eleotin, gets washed away if you consume alcohol. Suggestion: let’s abstain from alcohol a few months. Once your health is fully improved, then, you can enjoy again. (
